GUEST GUIDE
WHAT TO PACK FOR A STATIC CARAVAN HOLIDAY
Static caravans are self-catering, and what is supplied varies from owner to owner. The first step is to read the listing and ask the owner what is included. Then use this list to fill the gaps.
CHECK WITH THE OWNER FIRST
Ask these questions before you pack:
- Is bedding supplied, and are the beds made up when you arrive?
- Are towels supplied? Bath towels only, or beach towels too?
- Is there a starter pack, such as tea bags, washing up liquid, toilet roll and bin bags?
- Is there a cot or high chair if you need one?
- Is there a TV, and does it have streaming apps or just freeview?
- Is there wifi, and how good is the phone signal?
- Is there a hairdryer, iron, or washing machine?
BEDDING AND TOWELS
If bedding is not supplied, take sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases. Caravan beds can be odd sizes, so ask the owner which sizes you need. Fitted sheets help on narrow single beds. Pack bath towels, hand towels and beach towels. A few old towels are handy for wet coats and muddy boots.
KITCHEN BASICS
Most caravans have a cooker, a fridge, pans, plates, cups and cutlery. Few have a full larder. It helps to take:
- Tea, coffee, sugar and milk for the first night.
- Salt, pepper, oil, and any sauces you like.
- Washing up liquid, a sponge and tea towels.
- Bin bags and kitchen roll.
- Foil and food bags for leftovers and picnics.
- A cool bag for the journey and for days out.
Shop for the rest when you get there, or book a supermarket delivery to the park if the park allows it. Ask reception how deliveries work.
CLOTHES FOR ALL WEATHER
British weather can change in a day, even in summer. Pack layers, a waterproof coat and shoes that can get wet. Bring a jumper for the evenings, as caravans can feel cool at night. Swimwear is worth packing if there is a pool on the park or a beach nearby. Some park pools have rules on swimwear, so check if you are not sure.
BATHROOM AND FIRST AID
- Toiletries and toilet roll for the first day.
- Sun cream and after sun.
- Insect repellent.
- Plasters, antiseptic cream and pain relief.
- Any prescription medicines, with enough for the whole stay.
USEFUL EXTRAS
- A torch, as park roads can be dark at night.
- Phone chargers and a multi-plug extension lead, as sockets can be few.
- Board games, cards and books for wet days.
- A small first night bag, so you do not have to unpack everything at once.
- Slippers, as caravan floors can be cold.
- Pegs and a small airer for wet swimwear.
- Coins for any washing machines or dryers in the park launderette.
FOR CHILDREN
Pack favourite toys, a night light, and anything that helps them settle in a new place. If you need a travel cot, stair gate or bed guard, check whether the owner provides one. Bring buckets and spades, and a ball for the grass.
WHAT NOT TO BRING
Leave behind things the park or owner may not allow. Many parks do not allow disposable barbecues on the grass or near caravans. Check the rules on barbecues, gazebos, and extra tents before you pack them. Do not bring portable gas heaters, as they can be dangerous in a small space.
