VALUE GUIDE
A ROUGH VALUE FOR YOUR CARAVAN
Nothing you type here leaves your device. This is a rough guide, not a valuation.
Rough range if sold privately, staying on its pitch -
Put in the price new and the year.
Worked out from the depreciation rates published in several industry guides (listed below), which say a static caravan typically loses 15% to 25% of its value in its first year, then roughly 8% to 12% a year, slowing after about ten years. The park, a dealer or a trade buyer will usually offer less than a private buyer, because they buy at trade price to sell on. Your own park, make, size, decking and condition can move the price either way.
WHAT MOVES THE PRICE
- Years left on the licence. The single biggest factor. Under the NCC guidance a new caravan gets a licence of at least 12 years, and a used one gets what is left of that. At the end it must leave the park unless a new licence is agreed.
- Selling on the pitch or off it. A caravan that can stay on its pitch is worth far more than one that has to be moved. You cannot sell the pitch, only the caravan and the rest of its licence.
- Age and make. Like a car, a static caravan loses value from the day it is bought. The NCC says resale will be less than you paid.
- Condition and paperwork. Gas and electrical certificates, a service history, central heating, double glazing and well-kept decking all help.
- The park. Demand, facilities and site fees on your park affect what buyers will pay.
HOW TO SELL
Under the NCC guidance you can sell to the park, sell privately with the caravan staying on its pitch, or sell it off the park. If you sell privately on the pitch you give the park notice, the park can ask to buy it first, and you pay the transfer fee set out in your licence agreement.
The old Glass's Guide no longer covers caravans, so there is no free trade price list. The best guide to what yours is worth is what buyers will pay. Part-exchange or private sale?

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK
Is this a valuation?
No. It is a rough range worked out from published industry depreciation rates. For a firm figure, get offers: list it for sale free, and ask your park what it would pay.
Why will the park offer less?
A park or dealer buys at trade price so it can sell the caravan on with a new licence. A private buyer who keeps it on the pitch will usually pay more.
How much can the park charge if I sell privately?
The transfer fee in your licence agreement. Under the older trade code, commission on a private sale was capped at 15% of the price plus VAT.
